A critical review of the separation of arsenic oxyanions from dilute aqueous solution(the contribution of LGICT)

This paper presents an overview of research related to the effective removal of arsenates and arsenites from aqueous effluents, as exerted in-depth at Laboratory of General and Inorganic Chemical Technology of Chemistry Department in Aristotle University (Greece) during the last decade. Particularly, this review focuses on the use of sorption and flotation separation processes in order to remove arsenic oxyanions from water and wastewater streams. This paper presents, compares and comments the results more than twenty papers in commonly recognized journals throughout the world that have been publishedTen sorbent materials, natural and synthetic goethite, pure, hybrid and surfactant modified akaganéite, hydrotalcite, unmodified and modified biomass, pyrite fines and ferric hydroxide were examined in order to remove arsenic oxyanions from aqueous solutions. Equilibrium, thermodynamic and kinetic studies were carried out to determine the sorption capacity of these materials under various experimental conditions. Equilibrium data were analyzed by Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. The highest sorption capacity was found to be 328 mg arsenites g-1 by surfactant modified akaganéite and 120 mg arsenates g-1 by pure akaganéite. Moreover, arsenate removals and downstream flotation recoveries well over 90% were obtained at optimum pH value. during the last decade from the researchers of the above mentioned laboratory
