The great and angelic schema as a "second baptism"

The reference to the term “second baptism” as signifying the Great and Angelic Schema, as a well documented fact within the monastic tradition of the church. The use of this term transcends simple symbolism or metaphor. Rather it is related to the ritual celebration and symbolism character as well as to the essential definition of baptism. According to the related texts, this “second baptism” is mainly identified with the sacrament of repentance. Repentance is the sacred sacrament of renewal of baptism for all “lapsi”, who have fallen from baptismal grace on accout of sin. Moreover, it is understood as the baptism of tears. The entire canon and the office of the Great and Angelic Schema refer to this theme. It also prefaces to the person coming forward to the monastic profection of the angelic schema that at that very hour he or she is baptized anew and receives the former life of adoption and redemption.
