Offline Muon Data Quality Assurance in ATLAS

The ATLAS experiment in LHC is a High Energy Physics experiment meant to discover whatever may come up from p-p collisions at the energy of 14 TeV at the centre of mass. Bearing in mind the unprecedented luminosity and event rate at LHC collisions, the data volume to be received is huge and must be stored and analysed in an efficient way. That is the reason why state-of-the-art computing technologies have been adopted, such as Grid. Under such circumstances it becomes clear that the ongoing data acquisition process has to be monitored systematically to assure its quality and therefore the detector's good performance. This thesis describes all these procedures, whereas the code developed concetrates on the monitoring of reconstruction at Tier-0 centre, the heart of Grid, using data coming from the muon spectrometer. First, a detailed description of track reconstruction in the muon spectrometer is provided and then, results are shown demonstrating the performance of the ATLAS detector and software during the ATLAS Commissioning data taking periods. Software development within the Data Quality Monitoring framework is a demanding field. I requires deep understanding of the undergoing computing procedures, the layout and performance of the entire ATLAS experiment, the most complex experiment that has been designed up to this date.
Το πείραμα ATLAS στο LHC είναι ένα πείραμα Φυσικής Υψηλών Ενεργειών που καλείται να ανιχνεύσει οτιδήποτε μπορεί να προκύψει από τις συγκρούσεις p-p σε ενέργεια 14 TeV στο κέντρο μάζας. Δεδομένης της πρωτοφανούς φωτεινότητας και του ρυθμού με τον οποίο θα γίνονται οι συγκρούσεις στο LHC, ο όγκος των δεδομένων που λαμβάνεται είναι τεράστιος και θα πρέπει με κάποιο τρόπο να αποθηκευτεί και να αναλυθεί. Για αυτό το λόγο έχουν επιστρατευθεί καινοτόμες υπολογιστικές τεχνολογίες, όπως το Grid.
