Implementing Logistic Regression Analysis to Identify Incentives for Agricultural Cooperative Unions to adopt Quality Assurance Systems
The purpose of this paper is to examine the factors that determine the decision for implementing a Quality Assurance System (QAS) by the cooperative unions and cooperative businesses. A questionnaire was distributed among 122 second degree cooperative unions and cooperative businesses throughout Greece. A total of 88 cooperatives responded to the survey, across a range of locations, representing a response rate of approximately 70 per cent. Results reveal that 43 of the cooperatives have implemented a QAS. The findings are reported with logistic regression analysis to profile the criteria that affect the decision for quality assurance systems implementation. However, there remain a significant percentage of the coops who reported that either they do not know what a QAS is or they know but do not apply one. The findings of the logistic regression analysis generally suggest that there is a whole range of criteria such as size, perceptions concerning QAS and the cooperatives activities that affect the degree of a coop’s involvement in a QAS. The research explores the motives of implementing a QAS, which can go a long way towards determining a development strategy. However, the research has been conducted only in second decree agricultural cooperative unions, therefore may not adequately represent the motives of invested owned firms with similar characteristics. This is the first effort to detect the situation of the Greek cooperative unions and cooperative businesses with respect to quality assurance systems and it provides potential base to further research on the motives that can lead other small and medium size firms to adopt a quality assurance system.
