Coimbra short-term fellowships to doctoral students
The aim of the paper was to present the Coimbra Group (CG) short-visit fellowships to non-CG doctoral students and to raise awareness of, discuss and highlight the benefits derived from similar initiatives for both the host institute and the scholar involved. CG is a consortium of forty old, established European multidisciplinary universities of high international standard, founded in 1985. Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) is a founding member and the only Greek university participating in CG. One of the stated aims of CG is to promote the Group worldwide as a reference of academic excellence in Europe, with a view to attracting students to CG universities and to encouraging academic cooperation between the members and institutions from around the world. Scholarship programmes set up recently to achieve this include a programme for short term visits of young African researchers to CG universities. Two such visits to AUTH are presented, from a scholar from the Department of Microbiology, University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Makerere University, Uganda, respectively. For the scholars, perceived benefits of completing part of their doctoral research projects at AUTH included access to specific materials, equipment, infrastructure and know-how relevant to their research, as well as mentoring. It is noteworthy that the collaborations resulted in the publication of five and three papers respectively. Benefits for the host laboratory included exposure to the scholars’ specific expertise, the prospect of ccontinued collaboration with the scholar and the scholar’s institute. Both parties benefited from the academic, social and cultural ties that were formed, overall achieving the set aims.
