Silvicultural standards for riparian vegetation management.

This is a case study for improving the ecological conditions of urban streams in Mediterranean countries, based on the silvicultural characteristics of their vegetation. The data analysis showed that the ecological quality within the urban stream buffer zone mostly depends on the composition of the vegetation than its cover, with the best conditions found in areas with tall broadleaved trees, creating more closed canopy. The proposed silvicultural standards include the selection of the right species, the gradual replacement of non-native and invasive species, as well as infected trees and the promotion of structural complexity by planting trees and shrubs of different sizes.
