EXAMINING HOW AUTHENTIC VIDEO DVD EXPLOITATION IN AN EFL SETTING MAY CONTRIBUTE TO AN EFFECTIVE TEACHING LEARNING SITUATION.

The aim of the present dissertation is to investigate and assess the introduction and exploitation of technology, and more specifically video exploitation in a learning environment that refers to a classroom - based EFL (English as a Foreign Language) setting in a Greek Junior High School. The main objective is to examine how the use of authentic material, i. e. of non - ELT (English Language Teaching) video, could motivate and enchance students‟ learning, enable them to make cultural comparisons and finally improve their listening and speaking skills. What is examined as extremely important though, is the idea that video utilization can act as an inspiration for the teacher to intervene to the current teaching situation and establish a communicative learning environment in order to meet with the educational and language orientation of the contemporary curriculum which confronts language competence not only as product but as a developmental process too. A close inspection on the effectiveness of video - based teaching was achieved through the case study of a group of students that experienced five video - based lessons. The research lasted approximately one month during which by means of a needs analysis investigation, the students‟ needs and interests were revealed and were taken into consideration for the planning of original video - based lessons. The affirmed effectiveness of the lessons, which was evaluated by means of observation tasks and a questionnaire, could act as a basis for English teachers to adapt or construct similar activities in case they wish to incorporate video in their language classrooms in order to focus on listening, speaking and cultural familiarization.
