-ASSESSING WRITING SKILLS USING THE ALTERNATIVE METHOD OF PORTFOLIOS IN GREEK

This study presents the implementation of the assessment portfolio technique in theyoung learners classroom. Its aim is to find out whether the portfolio is an effective andreliable means of assessing students writing skills. The participants are Greek learnersof the English language, aged between nine and ten. The portfolio is a method whichhas many advantages but, even though it is included in the curriculum, is not widelyimplemented. The importance of the study lies ιn this fact, since its purpose is toexamine the reliability of the portfolio as an assessment tool. Before implementing theportfolio, the criteria for assessing it are determined. In order to check up on thereliability of the portfolio, students are assigned a test of writing skills. After comparingthe results of the portfolio with those of the test, it is proved that the portfolioassessment method is reliable. Therefore, it should be widely applied in manyeducational contexts provided that teachers are convinced of its effectiveness andproperly trained to use it in the classroom. However, suggestions are made for furtherexperimentation on the field, as it would not be right to establish the portfolio reliabilitybased only on the specific sample of this dissertation.
