Multitasking is a natural human ability to execute more than one activities, or tasks, over a short period. However, multitasking often may result in time wasted because of context switching, causing more defects or errors. Studies have presented that it is not possible to concentrate on more than one activities or tasks at a time. Despite this, if someone is experienced at one of the activities or tasks at hand, those tasks can then be accomplished.
R&D employees often must split their time between explorative and exploitative R&D operative tasks. In this dissertation, we will explore the influence of multitasking on R&D performance, productivity and employees’ well-being. We will also examine the level of multitasking that is both beneficial for the employees and the company and how multitasking beyond this level may result in introducing waste and discomfort to the company with many negative effects.
The analysis will be based on theoretical methodology, real case studies and last but not least completed lean six sigma projects that removed waste from multitasking as much as possible. The theoretical analysis is based on a systematic review of publications and other academic papers. Regarding real case studies, data were collected from actual Nokia Hellas R&D teams and the results are analyzed and presented. Finally, for the lean six sigma aspects, actual work, methodologies, best practices and lessons learned are presented and discussed.
Based on all the above, the target of this thesis is to obtain safe conclusions regarding the R&D’s resource allocation process and how to utilize them in an efficient way as well as avoid inefficient practices of multitasking.
