Ο στόχος ήταν να προσδιοριστουν οι στάσεις, αντιλήψεις και οι πρακτικές των δασκάλων ως την Διαπολιστισμική Επικοινωνιακή Ικανότητα στην διδασκαλία της αγγλικής. Επιπλέον, εξετάζοντας τις διαστάσεις της διαπολιτισμικής διδασκαλίας γλωσσών του Byram (1997), στόχευσε στη διερεύνηση των πτυχών της ικανότητας αυτής που θεωρούνται ως οι πλέον σημαντικές. Τα αποτελέσματα έδειξαν ότι οι καθηγητές έχουν μεγάλη εκτίμηση για την ενσωμάτωση του Διαπολιστισμικής Επικοινωνιακής Ικανότητας στην αγγλική διδασκαλία. Επιπλέον, φαίνονται να την εκλαμβάνουν ως κάτι παραπάνω από «πραγματική γνώση», δίνοντας έμφαση στη συναισθηματική της διάσταση, όπου οι μαθητές διδάσκονται την περιέργεια και την ανοικτότητα, την ετοιμότητα να αναστέλλουν τις δυσπιστίες για άλλους πολιτισμούς. Ωστόσο, παρατηρήθηκε απόκλιση μεταξύ των πεποιθήσεών και των πρακτικών τους.
The aim was to identify teachers’ attitudes, understandings and practices towards ICC teaching. What is more, considering Byram’s (1997) dimensions of ICC, it aimed to explore the specific aspects of ICC considered as most important for their teaching context. Statistical analysis showed that EFL teachers have high appreciation for integrating ICC in ELT. Moreover, they seem to regard ICC as something more than ‘factual knowledge’ putting emphasis on the attitudinal aspect where students are being taught curiosity and openness, readiness to suspend disbeliefs about other cultures. However, a discrepancy between their beliefs and their practices was observed. Even though many teachers stated that their main cultural objective was to foster tolerance and empathy, few of them applied teaching strategies beyond the level of transmission of facts.
