The church of the Taxiarchs at Elaphi, Kalambaka

ΠΑΣΑΛΗ, Αφροδίτη
Είναι μονόκλιτος σταυρεπίστεγος ναός της κατηγορίας Α1 της κατατάξεως Α. Ορλάνδου, με τρουλλοκαμάρα υπεράνω της εγκάρσιας καμάρας, τοποθετημένη με διεύθυνση από τα ανατολικά προς τα δυτικά, διαστάσεων 4.75 x 4.25 μ. Στα δυτικά υπάρχει προσκολλημένος μεταγενεστέρως ευμεγέθης, ξυλόστεγος χώρος που χρησιμοποιείται ως κυρίως ναός, ενώ ο αρχικός ναΐσκος αποτελεί σήμερα το Ιερό Βήμα. Ένα μέρος του τοιχογραφικού διακόσμου του ΙΖ΄ αιώνα στον αρχικό ναό διατηρείται σήμερα. Η προτίμηση στο σπάνιο αυτό αρχιτεκτονικό τύπο αποδίδεται στην προσπάθεια εφαρμογής βυζαντινών προτύπων από τη γειτονική Ήπειρο.

It is a transverse-vault, single-nave church, of type A1 according to A. Orlandos’ categorization, with a raised central bay, oriented in an east to west direction and measuring 4.75 m x 4.25 m, which acts as a dome over the transverse barrel-vault. Attached to the west there is a large timber-roofed space used as the main church, while the original chapel now comprises the sanctuary. Part of the painted wall decoration of the 17th century in the original church is preserved to this day. The preference for this rare architectural type is attributed to the attempt to apply Byzantine models from neighboring Epirus.
