Τα επτά επεισόδια του θεομητορικού κύκλου στον ναό της Παναγίας στο Ανισαράκι Κανδάνου, έργο της τελευταίας τριακονταετίας του 14ου αιώνα, παρουσιάζουν ενδιαφέρον λόγω τόσο της συμπόρευσης της «αρχαΐζουσας» με τη νεωτερική τεχνοτροπία όσο και της συνύπαρξης υστεροβυζαντινών και δυτικότροπων εικονογραφικών στοιχείων. Η παράσταση της Ευλογηθείσας εν τω ναώ αποτελεί το μοναδικό γνωστό παράδειγμα ενός «δυτικού» θέματος στη βυζαντινή μνημειακή ζωγραφική, ενώ η ιδιόρρυθμη απεικόνιση της Κολακείας συνδυάζει την Επταβηματίζουσα με την παραδοσιακή Κολακεία, όπως και στην Dečani.

The seven episodes of the Mariological cycle in the church of the Virgin at Anisaraki near Kandanos in Crete, painted in the last thirty years of the fourteenth century, are interesting not only for the concurrence of an ‘archaizing’ with a ‘modern’ style, but also and primarily for the coexistence of Late Byzantine and Western iconographic features. The representation of the Blessed Mary in the Temple is the only known example of a ‘Western’ subject in Byzantine monumental painting, while the peculiar depiction of the Kolakeia (Caress) is a synthesis of the Heptabematizousa (Mary taking her first seven steps) with the traditional Kolakeia, as it also happens in Dečani.
