The aim of this master thesis is to present the construction of the concept of
illness in Thomas Mann‟s The Magic Mountain. Tuberculosis is an illness that was
mythicized in 19
th
and 20
th
century literature and therefore acquired romantic
dimensions. In this study it is examined the way that literature, as a means of
representing the experience of illness, through the case of Magic Mountain,
contributes in a new way of understanding or reconstructing the concept of illness as
well as the perception of social reality. Emphasis in the analysis is given, on the one
hand, in polyphony according to which the concept of illness is constructed and, on
the other hand, on representations of life in the sanatorium, therapeutical practices
and the medicalization of social relationships.
