(EL)
Magnetic materials have a crucial role to play in the area of storage devices for the computer industry. For this reason there has been extensive reseach in this area over the last two decades. Previously all the materials that were used for hard disks were ferromagnetic. Implementation of new materials that exhibit unusual magnetic ground states (such single-molecule or low-dimensional magnets) can offer novel electronic devices, thus offering new routes to increased storage capacity. In this project we study the ultrafast coherent dynamics (picosecond time-scale) of the ErFeO3 perovskite by time-resolved laser spectroscopy and suggest possible use of the material’s response into future magneto-optical devices. Large single crystals of the ErFeO3 were grown by the traveling solvent floating zone method. The material was characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction. It confirms that it is a member of the family of orthoferrites, adopting an orthorhombic crystal structure (space group Pbnm). Because of the anisotropic lattice characteristics the material entails important birefringent behavior. Bulk magnetic susceptibility experiments as a function of temperature confirmed that our ErFeO3 sample behaves as a canted antiferromagnet (ΤN~ 640 Κ) that undergoes a spin reorientation transition (TR) in the region 87<T<96 K. In this region the antiferromagnetic propagation vector, G, related to the Fe3+ (S= 5/2) sub-lattice changes continuously from the canted, with respect to the a-crystal axis direction, into the c-axis. The changes in the magnetocrystalline anisotropy can drive such a transition through appropriate spin-lattice coupling. We explore this particular microscopic behavior by means of the time-resolved linear birefringence technique we have developed. In particular the aim of this work is the implementation of the Inverse Faraday Effect (IFE) in order to achieve non-thermal control of spin dynamical phenomena in the local scale. Herein, we present the development of the methodology, which allows short light pulses to trigger the ErFeO3 single crystal by creating temporary intense magnetic fields (tens of Tesla locally) that can promote true magneto-optical control of the material’s magnetic ground state; we suggest that this feature may have immediate impact in magnetoelectronics. An “all optical pump-probe” setup was put together. The source is a femtosecond pulsed laser (Ti:sapphire 800 nm), with a pulse duration of ≈270 fs, equipped with a continuous flow optical cryostat. Two beams, the pump and the probe, arrive with spatial coincidence on the surface of the birefringent ErFeO3 single crystal; the experiments are carried out in transmission geometry. The pump beam is used to trigger the sample, while the probe beam is adjusted temporally and monitors the possible development of coherent oscillations through changes in the time-resolved (over a few picoseconds) linear birefringence (Δnij) of the material. We follow the temperature evolution (77< T< 300 K) of the optical properties (Δnij~ εij~ G; where ε is the dielectric permittivity), both in their static form as well as in their dynamical aspects in the neighborhood of ΤR ~ 96 Κ. The experimental results were compared with previous studies that had utilized inelastic Raman scattering. From the phenomenological evaluation of the results we infer that the impact of triggering the material by short light pulses is the generation of optical phonon modes (f~ 2.5 THz) through the absorption by the Fe3+ sub-lattice. Our results demonstrate the utility of this method as an efficient technique for controlling collective excitations of either lattice (phonons) or spin (magnons) in electronically correlated systems. In one future possibility if we assume that such spin dynamics are combined with the exchange bias effect, magnetic control of ferromagnetic films can be achieved (by light) in a several picoseconds time-window (at least an order of magnitude better than in current ferromagnets), allowing us to construct ultrafast magneto-optical switches incorporating nanoscale materials. Such fast switching devices can play a key role towards high density magneto-optical storage disks and non-volatile memories. Future work on this project will require additional optimization of the “pumpprobe setup” to achieve improved measuring statistics and better time-resolution, so that efficient non-thermal triggering (IFE) of the systems is possible. The project could then extend into photo-induced characterization of the dynamics involving diverse natural systems extending from molecular magnets to nanocrystal structures. These are good candidates where the strong coupling between light and matter may support novel quantum phenomena that are pronounced due to the nanoscale dimensions the materials themselves. (EN)
