(EL)
Spin chemistry is the study of magnetic effects in chemical reactions. They are known to occur due to the electronic spins of radical intermediates during chemical reactions. Such effects have been observed in many chemical systems and recently during electron transfer in photosynthetic systems. The basic model proposed to explain such effects is called the radical pair mechanism and provides a basic for the interpretation of the experiments. Chemically induced dynamic nuclear polarization (CIDNP) is the emergence of non-equilibrium nuclear spin polarization during radical pair reactions. It is observed using NMR spectroscopy and it has been observed in many photosynthetic electron transfer reactions. The equation that has been used traditionally in spin chemistry to de- scribe the quantum evolution of radical pair spins was introduced by R. Haberkorn in 1976. A more general theory that includes the quantum mea- surement dynamics that take place during radical pair reactions was derived by I. Kominis in 2008. Experiments so far have not been able to show which theory describes the kinetics of radical pair reactions correctly. In this work, we come up with a test to compare the correctness of the two theories. The test checks the internal consistency of each theory and is based on a description using quantum trajectories. The test is done in the framework of CIDNP during electron transfer reactions in photosynthesis, a model system that is well suited for such a comparison. We show that the traditional master equation of spin chemistry is not in good agreement with a single molecule viewpoint and thus lacks internal consistency. On the other hand we find that the newly proposed equation is fairly consistent with the corresponding quantum trajectories and is thus better suited for the description of radical pair dynamics.
