Based on ethnographic data research related to the experiences of both pre-operative and post-operative FTM persons (female-to-male transgender and transsexual people) in Greece, this paper will investigate the issue of negotiating the self both within and against medical discourse, and the particular strategies developed as a response to the regulatory means of the medical establishment. In addition, this essay also examines the ways in which the immediate family and the wider social context perceive the experiences and transition of FTM trans people, as they are forced to engage with and often challenge the dominant medical discourse. The sub-questions of this research relate inextricably to the ways in which the concepts and understandings of social, cultural and biological sex are deployed and appropriated within the medical discourse, and the means by which these concepts of sex and gender are utilised in the clinical assessment of FTM trans people. This research focuses closely on the specific subjectivising strategies deployed within the medical argumentation of FTM trans people, and the criteria by which these individuals are accordingly assessed, diagnosed and pathologised. In analysing these strategies of subjective formulation and regulation, this essay focuses on the inherent assumptions and perceptions of FTM trans patients within a clinical setting, as well as the circumstances through which the subject is required to undergo a self-effacing denial of their personal experiences in order to successfully gain access to treatment. The medical establishment as well as the immediate family and social environment are notable sites where the concept of the ‘subject’ as a self-contained and autonomous whole is under constant political regulation and struggle, with the persistent risk of self-effacement, refusal, persecution and violence. The binarism between a mentally ‘healthy’ and ‘mentally ill’ patient is one which works tacitly to sustain and reinforce the particular codifications of FTM trans people throughout assessment, as well as inform their own responses and narration of their experiences in the clinical environment. In this context, the particular strategies and responses used by FTM patients of the medical institution reveal both conflict and resistance to the subjectivising forces of clinical assessment, as well as a temporary submission to these forces in order to satisfy the demands of the doctor, whilst small communal networks of alliances between FTM trans people work to create and sustain solidarity and information exchange regarding the assessment process. In reevaluating the experience of the self of FTM subjects through the corporeal materiality of the body, this paper attempts to negotiate a ‘return to the body’ through the prism of subjective bodily experience and self-formation; a fragile and precarious process whereby the dominant discourse incessantly informs and regulates the ways in which these bodies can be perceived, imagined and understood. The methodological approach that informs the aims and objectives of this research paper is based on a Foucauldian approach which engages critically with the regulatory deployment of institutional discourse and the interrelational dynamics of knowledge and power, as well as feminist and trans theoretical approaches such as those of Rosi Braidotti, Stephen Whittle and Raine Dozier. The notion of the subject with regards to experienced bodily materiality which stands outside and against the oppressive agenda of the clinical establishment is a concern which runs central to the specifications of this research project.
