This doctoral thesis attempts the experimental archaeological study of Greek monumental painting of the late Classical and Early Hellenistic period in Macedonia during the 4th and 3rd centuries BC. Studies done to date with modern analytical methods can confirm the materials and techniques used in ancient works of art. They cannot however answer to questions related to the creation of a work, including the method of application of the painting technique. The main purposes of this research were a) to study in practice the process of painting a Macedonian tomb, and b) to understand the method of work of an ancient painter. The research focused on technical aspects of painting such as tools, materials and the wall painting technique. The tomb of Persephone in the Grand Tumulus of Vergina was selected for the purposes of the research. The study of this tomb required the confirmation of the creation of the work with the technique of fresco painting, the type of fresco technique used, and the determination of the manner of its application. Included here are the choices that the ancient painter had in the creation of the commission, such as colours, lime-mortars and application techniques.
