Family businesses are considered as the engines of the post-industrial growth, the cornerstone of the European economy for at least the last three centuries and a very prominent player in the world economy in general (Poutziouris, 2001). Their contribution in creating and maintaining jobs, promoting entrepreneurial activities and incubating new business that has brought great economic development is a fact that cannot be questioned (Vozikis,2009/ Heck and Stafford 2001). This is a study on Greek family firms concentrated in the area of Kozani and its purpose is to indentify critical factors that have an affect towards the matter of succession at a regional level. For the purposes of this research 100 small-medium sized companies were tested; data was collected from interviews with their managers in order to find out whether they have a succession plan, which factors affect positively a transition of a company but mainly we focused on those factors that remain an obstacle for the succession process in family firms. Interesting results in family relation matters, managerial tasks and the role of state in the succession process provide us with useful information in order to indicate a safer path for the whole procedure.
