Exploring the reasons that lead to business start-up in a declining economy

Mitsios, Fotis

Purpose – In the present dissertation, the issue under scrutiny is the motivations that lead to technological start-ups in Greece under adverse economic circumstances. It also aims to understand if these motivations are related to growth attitude. Design/Methodology/Approach – To examine these motivations thoroughly, a survey has been conducted with Likert-style questions regarding entrepreneurs in Greece (=23), who are owners/founders of tech start-ups. The received questionnaires of the survey have been analyzed using multivariate statistical analysis, in line with a measuring instrument constructed to measure the reasons leading to business start-ups. Findings – Contrary to our expectation, the entrepreneurs of tech start-ups in Greece are motivated by the Need for Achievement, Extrinsic Rewards, and the Need for Independence and Security. The findings indicate that entrepreneurs have not been motivated by extrinsic factors alone, even in declining economy. Therefore, the outcome of this study also supports the view that entrepreneurship should also be measured in other terms beyond financial. It was also found that start-ups tend to be innovative and growth-oriented firms, even in such conditions. Research Limitations/Implications – The most important limitation of this dissertation is the small sample, although the results present strong evidence. Furthermore, the findings cannot be generalized to other countries’ context, even with similar culture, because the findings are highly influenced by economic conditions, entrepreneurial environment, politics and other social factors. Practical Implications – Since motivations differ across countries, policy-makers can benefit from developing a specific program for supporting environment, and not merely financial support, to encourage business creation. Thereupon, policy-makers should be careful regarding where they apply policies, that is, not only in a national but in regional and in some cases in a local level, in order to be more effective. Originality/Value – The present study constitutes first to examine the motivations leading to tech start-ups under adverse economic conditions in the Greek context.
