This dissertation was written as part of the MSc in Sustainable Development at the International Hellenic University. The subject of this dissertation is about the grounds for societal reactions and public opposition to wind farms siting, going beyond the classic Not In My Back Yard thinking, which has been found not to apply at all times and which does not in fact explain the real motives behind such oppositional behavior nor does it offer any hints as to how to eliminate such stances. Fairly recent bibliography moves a step further towards a more systematic conceptual background concerning oppositional behaviour, where place attachment together with other social issues related to wind farms siting, such as trust and justice, play a highly critical role. The scope of this dissertation is to analyze the reasons for societal reactions and in particularly the reasons for societal reactions caused by attachment to place. This dissertation attempts to reveal the importance of place attachment and the relations of place attachment to supporting or oppositional behavior with regard to wind farms siting, while it also suggests ways how to overcome societal reactions.
