Exceptions and limitations to copyright for educational and information purposes

Melliou, Kallithea

The starting point of the present study is the realization that the social need for education and the fundamental freedom of expression and access to information always have and always will delimit authors’ exclusive economic rights and related rights on copyrighted works to an extent justified by the interest of the community in participating in the dissemination of knowledge and culture. The study considers the use of copyrighted works for educational and information purposes under the provisions on exceptions and limitations in the existing copyright regime (international, EU and national) with a focus on Greek copyright legislation, in an attempt to demonstrate the directions to which copyright law is progressing in the light of fundamental human rights and freedoms and the influence of new technology on the economy and society with regard to the flow of information in the frameworks of education and information.
