Paleochristian and Byzantine Monuments of Thessaloniki
Platsa, Argyri
The dissertation records the present state of the Paleochristian and Byzantine Monuments of Thessaloniki by analyzing the different kinds of problems the monuments face every day and searching for appropriate and practical solutions. The close observation of these problems from different angles (aesthetic, visitation, conservation) leads to the conclusion that their long lasting existence is a result of the centralistic model of their administration, the lack of a long-term management plan and poor cooperation among the competent authorities. By keeping these facts in mind solutions that overcome the hurdles of the administration system and the lack of management plan are proposed. Finally, for all solutions the need of establishment of relationships among competent authorities that are based on cooperation and solidarity is stressed, which has been absent for many years.
