NATIONAL SELF DEFINITION IN A CHANGING ECONOMIC ENVIRONMENT A  TESTIMONY  FROM  A GREEK  COMMERCIAL-EMPLOYEE IN THE RUSSIAN GRAIN TRADE Grigorios Kouppas's correspondence that is kept in E.L.I.A (Hellenic Litterary and Historical Archive), outlines in a unique way the geographical and social mobility of the Greek merchants in the Russian grain markets. From this point of view it forms, one of the few historical sources in Greece that enrich and deepen our knowledge concerning the entrepreneurship of the Greeks living in southern Russia during the difficult for the Greek presence third quarter of the 19th century. The article follows Kouppas's itineraries in the southern Russian provinces as well as his links, through correspondence and exchange of goods, with his homeland. Grigorios's letters highlight the emergence of the national conscience among Greek immigrants in Russia and allow us to follow up the way they conceived the Imperial government's position towards the Eastern Question while living in an unstable and changing economic environment. This latter created, under the pressure of the awakening of all ethnicities in Russia, the need to reinforce the national characteristics of the community under the leadership of the Greek Consulate and by strengthening the educational and religious mechanisms.
