Η ανάδυση του λόγου περί εθνικής ταυτότητας στον ουγγρικό τύπο του 18ου αιώνα
A. SEIDLER; Institute for Neohellenic Research (INR)/NHRF
THE FORMATION OF THE DISCOURSE ON NATIONAL IDENTITY IN THE 18th CENTURY HUNGARIAN PRESSThis paper is dealing with multilingualism in the Kingdom of Hungary, with the cohabitation of numerous ethnical groups of different native languages and the common language in administration and the scientific community -Latin, later shortly German, and with the resulting conflicts, which were ignited on the question of a dominating language. At the end of the century the decision was reached in favour of the Hungarian language as the leading language in periodicals and in literature. Albeit, Latin remained the official administrative language far into the 19th century. Where the germanspeaking Hungari in the Kingdom of Hungary served as link between Hungary and the foreign countries and were dominating the evolving sciences throughout the country, language reformers and the proclaimers of Hungarian on the other hand placed emphasis on the necessity of a developing mother tongue for conserving the Hungarian nation from the early eighties on - not only as a reaction to Josephs II language edict of 1784.
