Η κλασική οπτική μέθοδος των καυστικών χρησιμοποιείται για τον άμεσο πειραματικό προσδιορισμό του λόγου του Poisson ενός ισότροπου ελαστικού υλικού. Απαιτούνται μόνο ένα απλό πείραμα εφελκυσμού και η μέτρηση δύο διαμέτρων καυστικών. Δεν χρειάζονται οι αριθμητικές τιμές όλων των άλλων σταθερών στην πειραματική διάταξη. Η μέθοδος αυτή είναι εφαρμόσιμη για καυστικές τόσο από ανάκλαση όσο και από διέλευση του φωτός. Περιγράφεται επίσης σύντομα η περίπτωση του πειραματικού προσδιορισμού του μέτρου ελαστικότητας (με γενίκευση της πιο πάνω μεθόδου). Αναφέρονται επίσης αρκετές επιπλέον δυνατότητες.

The classical optical method of caustics is used for the direct experimental determination of the Poisson ratio of an isotropic elastic material. Only one simple tension experiment and the measurement of two diameters of caustics are required. The numerical values of all other constants in the experimental set-up are not required. This method is applicable both for reflected and for transmitted caustics. The case of the experimental determination of the modulus of elasticity (by a generalization of the above method) is also described in brief. Several additional possibilities are also reported.
