Interactive computational techniques for reliability evaluation of power systems including wind generating units are presented. The fluctuating nature of energy produced by wind generators has a different effect on the overall system reliability than conventional units. The overall power system is divided into a subsystem containing the conventional units and into several subsystems containing the wind generating units. For each of these subsystems a generation availability model is built and the obtained models are combined to evaluate the loss of load expectation index for the time period of study. The developed methodology is illustrated by the analysis of a system based on a real power distribution system existing in a Greek island. Although the paper concentrates on wind energy sources, the general configuration of the developed techniques is applicable to generation systems containing any type of intermittent sources such as solar energy sources. © 1989 Springer-Verlag.
