New concepts on the Det.-criterion (EN)

Papadopoulos, GA (EN)

In this paper new concepts on Det.-criterion of fracture are discussed. The development of Det.-criterion is based on the second stress invariant, and not on the third stress invariant as in the title of the previous paper by the author [Engng Fracture Mech. 27, 643-652 (1987)] is referred. For plane-conditions (plane-stress or plane-strain) the Det.-criterion of fracture is based on the determinant of the stress tensor, Det.(σij). The determinant Det.(σij) is calculated along a circle around the crack tip, which represents the boundary of the core-region. The initial curve of the caustics, as boundary of the core-region, is defined. From the distribution of the Det.(σij) around the crack tip, the direction of the crack initiation and the critical stress of fracture are calculated. © 1989. (EN)
