The elliptic paraboloid failure surface for 2D-transtropic plates (fiber laminates) (EN)

Theocaris, PS (EN)

It has been shown that the elliptic paraboloid failure surface (EPFS) constitutes an ideal criterion for studying yielding and failure of orthotropic and transtropic (transversely isotropic) materials. It is superior than other similar criteria since it describes the mode of failure in a rational way and furthermore it possesses the extra property of being based on physical grounds. The properties of this criterion in the 3D-principle stress space were well established in previous studies. In order to check its universal validity it is necessary to define the properties of its intersections with the three principal stress planes. In this way the respective plane failure loci will be derived which may be compared with existing experimental evidence which is integrally confined to plane tests and data. In this paper the properties of intersections of EPFS were originated and the laws of variation of the position, the shape and orientation of these cross-sections by the principal stress planes were established. It was shown that all characteristic properties of the transtropic materials under plane states, which are intimately related with fiber reinforced composites were excellently described by these loci and a satisfactory coincidence of the theoretical results with experimental evidence was set-up. © 1989.
