It is shown that the dynamics of an elastic cable submerged in a heavy fluid, such as water, are dominated by its elastic stiffness; hence dynamic similitude is ensured only if the elasticity of the line is properly modelled. The dynamic tension may reach large values, possibly exceeding the static tension, and then the free falling velocity of the cable becomes a critical parameter. © 1990. (EN)
