A study has been made of the characteristic chemical reactions occurring during catalytic hydrotreatment in a bench scale trickle bed reactor of an atmospheric heavy residue using various process conditions. Design equations interrelating chemical reactions and relating product properties with the severity of chemical reactions are given. Above 90-95% desulphurization and hydrocracking, the characteristic properties of the products are very significantly improved and these oils can be considered as proper feeds for production of lighter products. © 1991.
