In this paper we analytically evaluate the Cell Insertion Ratio (CIR) of a Virtual Channel Connection (VCC) in an Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) network in terms of bit error rates and cell rates. We compare the CIR with the Cell Loss Ratio (CLR) of a VCC due to transmission errors. We show that the currently available data of the services supported by broadband ATM networks usually give a CIR value, which is far below this CLR value, although we have found that under certain conditions this is not true. © 1992.
