In this paper the mechanics of drilling tool-rock interfaces under shear are studied by means of consistent second-grade generalization of the flow theory of plasticity for frictional, cohesion-softening material. Boundary conditions are formulated on the basis of the second-order virtual work equation. Numerical results based on a finite element analysis of an example are presented and are critically discussed. © 1992. (EN)
