Comparison of accurate with approximate expressions of stresses for the interface crack problem (EN)

Spyropoulos, CP (EN)

The plane problem of two bonded dissimilar materials with a central crack along the common interface and subjected to biaxial load at infinity is examined by comparing the accurate expressions for stresses, equally valid everywhere, both near and far from the crack tip regions, with the approximate expressions for the stresses used up to now which have a limited accuracy and area of validity. To illustrate the advantages of the closed form expressions for the stresses over the approximate ones based on the singular solution, improved by taking into account the non-singular term due to the biaxial loading parameter, selective stress distributions for both expressions are presented. On these charts, for reasons of better comparison, the relative errors between the closed form expressions and the best approximate expressions for each of the stress components are presented. The existing significant differences urge one to make use of the proposed expressions in any problem related to the subject of this article. © 1993. (EN)
