The usual practice of assuming periodic outdoor conditions for calculation of the transient wall heat flow in air-conditioning load calculations leads to considerable errors in the case of a significant temporary deviation of the outdoor air temperature from periodicity. In the present work, which is based on a finite-difference solution of the transient non-periodic wall heat-conduction problem, we develop a very simple correlation for calculation of the increase of the maximum indoor heat flow Δq caused by a temporary rise of the outdoor air temperature in 15 typical wall constructions. For each one of these, the correlation expresses Δq in terms of temperature-deviation duration, of mean temperature difference and of amplitude difference of the temperature oscillations during and before the deviation from periodicity. © 1993.
