Mixed-mode caustics for the cracked infinite plate using the exact solution (EN)

Theotokoglou, EN (EN)

The caustics formed in mixed-mode conditions, types I and II, are studied for the problem of the infinite plate with a crack. The exact solution is used, given by the known Muskhelishvili complex potentials. Dimensional analysis of the problem is employed to account for the crack length. Two overall independent parameters govern the formation caustics in mixed-mode conditions and a detailed numerical investigation is presented. For the commonly used characteristic dimensions of caustics, the values obtained from the exact theory and its singular term approximation are compared. The results are given in appropriate figures. In general, the differences in the values may be considered as appreciable in the region near the crack tip where ""often"" experiments are conducted. All the major characteristic features are affected, including the cusp axis of the caustic. A symmetry study and its consequences are also presented for a class of solutions. The value of the SIFs ratio may be approximately determined. © 1995. (EN)
