The possibility of reducing the iron content of the mineral product from the deposits by a selective leaching process with oxalic acid was investigated. Result showed that at low pH, the oxalate 1) complexes ferrous iron, and the resulting complex is a stronger reducing agent that the hydroxonium ion, H3O+; 2) is specifically bound to surface to the surface iron (III) as both bidendate and monodentate complexes; 3) forms ternary complexes with surfaces iron(III) and iron(II), thus binding ferrous iron to the surface; and 4) can act as an electron bridge for the transfer of an electron between iron(II) and the surface iron(III).
