In this research, an original system of artificial vision for the quality control of pharmaceutical solutions has been developed. The software that was developed can be divided in two basic parts. The first one is the ''calibration'' part and deals with the automatic recognition and learning of the shape of the bottle as well as with the calculation of the height of the contained solution. Real-time operation is not a requirement in this part which is run off: line once for every product and before the filling process begins. The second part is the ''quality control'' part and is responsible for the location of the bottle, the control of its position within the frame of the image, the quality check of the contents of the bottle and the check for the adequate filling of the bottle. For this part, real-time operation is required so that each bottle is inspected during production. A simulation of the operation of the system was attempted in the Remote Sensing Laboratory of the NTUA. The trials were done with glass serum bottles of a diameter of 7 cm. The artificial vision system operated with complete success when the speed of the conveyor belt was 6 m/min. The artificial vision system developed is part of the quality control system. The mechanical parts of an integrated quality control system will be created. (EN)
