The kinematics of continua and the concept of connection on classical space-time (EN)

Kadianakis, ND (EN)

The 4-dimensional classical space-time manifold has often been used for frame independent formulations of continuum mechanics. The geometric concept of connection defined on it is used mainly for the representation of dynamical concepts. In this paper we present a kinematical interpretation of the connection. We classify the set of motions of continua according to their relative kinematical quantities, and the set of compatible connections on space-time in a similar way. Then we show that a connection may be considered as a specific class of continuous motions. (EN)
