This paper is an account of the efforts to specify production control software requirements for the electronics industry. This industry comprises several types of products (e.g., integrated circuits and components, printed circuit boards and electronic subsystems, consumer end-products, etc.) produced in differently organised factories. There is a need for a typology of production systems coupled with the instantiations of the different types of electronics factories. The typology of electronics manufacturing is connected to reference data models for production control software requirements. A generic reference data model is proposed, and a method to derive specific reference models for the different types of electronics manufacturing is described. An implementation example taken from the experience of the IASON (Intelligent Agents for Shop Floor OperatioNs) Esprit Project is given. A data-oriented approach in contrast to a function-oriented approach is adopted for the description of the reference models. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science B.V. (EN)
