Concerning automated assembly: knowledge-based issues and a fuzzy system for assembly under uncertainty (EN)

Stamou, GB (EN)
Tzafestas, SG (EN)

In this paper a review of some fundamental issues of knowledge-based approaches for automated assembly is presented. First, the basic requirements of automated assembly are discussed and the advantages of knowledge-based techniques are highlighted. Then a number of existing models and techniques for knowledge-based assembly are reviewed. Some of them deal with the uncertainty one way or another. It is argued that fuzzy logic- and fuzzy reasoning-based techniques are more adequate than others under specific circumstances. A hierarchical assembly expert system which is based on such techniques and is designed and implemented by the authors' group is then described. Finally, some results produced by this system are presented. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved. (EN)
