The issue of this lecture is the challenge of balancing the presence of ancient monuments in a densely populated urban environment. The occasion for the lecture was the recent excavation for the metro line in the city of Thessaloniki, by which ancient findings revealed. Thessaloniki is a historical city and has lots of archaeological spaces, so it is a good example for research on ways of managing the problem, in the general context of protection of monuments in modern times. It appeals to set a priority issue for the society to determine for the importance of monuments against the importance of a quick public means of transport in the city. Other historical cities face the same problem at the moment, but it is expected that this procedure will conclude by giving new ideas and applies for public space treatment. Thessaloniki can assist to this progress of urban planning.
