The theme of this thesis is the use of the concept of Dystopia as a means of Criticism, mainly as it was used by a group of architects named as Superstudio. The motive for this research work was the literature book “1984”, written by George Orwell. “1984” is a representative dystopian work through which the main question of this thesis was created: what conceptual gap has to defray “dys-topia” relative to “utopia”? In other words, our investigation has been focused on how the sense of dystopia approaches modern society problems, in order to cause the thought, to influence attitudes, to awaken the consciences of modern man. The main domain of the investigation is architecture and more specifically how dystopia was used by the Florentine radical architectural group Superstudio in the decade of 1960-1970. This was a crucial decade for the historical continuity. The radical architects of the ‘60s do not use utopia with the same characteristics it used to have, but raise questions and experiment with new ways to form new attitudes for the future life. The essay has been structured in four parts. In the first part, the concepts of utopia-dystopia and the one of radical architecture are introduced along with the historical background of 1960’s. In the second part, the most important projects of Superstudio are analyzed along with a short mention at the work of another relative group known as Archizoom. In the third part, the work of Superstudio and Archizoom is juxtaposed with the architectural trends of their era –modern movement, technomorphic utopia of the 60’s and situationists-. In the forth part, the methods used by the group of Superstudio in order to highlight dystopia as a means of criticism are inquired. In the end, we mention how the work of these two architectural groups influenced the architects of the next decade -1970-. Also, we set some concerns raised during our research considering them as a food for thought for further investigation. (EN)
