The subject of this thesis is the iconography of Late Minoan III larnakes. It is divided into four parts. Part One consists in the theoritical discussion underlying the research. The theoritical discussion covers two discrete areas relating to the general parameters that governed the iconographical material of the larnakes. First of all, there is the theoritical debate about the art and style (Chapter I). On the basis of the theoritical speculation of, mainly, the ’80s and ’90s in the general area of style, the thesis examines the significance of the iconography in pre-industrial societies in order to uncover its multidimensional role. This is followed by a discussion of subjects relating to mortuary practices, which are the second area with which the archaeological is connected (Chapter II). This chapter deals with problems connected with efforts to reconstruct the social structure using the data gleaned from mortuary practices, and also discusses burial rituals and their significance for prehistoric societies. Chapter III moves on to minoan archaeology and looks at the way scholars have approached the iconographical material since Evans’s time. In most cases, the material is isolated from its context and interpreted from a one-dimensional point of view. This is followed by a discussion of the methodological and intepretative practices by which the iconography of the larnakes has been studied hitherto. The last chapter in Part One (Chapter IV) presents the basic methodological axes for an approach to the iconographical material in LMIII larnakes.Part Two discusses aspects of the Late Minoan III period and related problems, and sets out the ‘’text’’ in which the iconographical data under examination belong. It is not the purpose of this study to reconstruct the entire period ( that would be outside the scope of the research ), so much as to correlate one specific mortuary with the changes that were taking place in this phase of Minoan civilization. In other words, the basic aim is to investigate the social and ideological significance in this period of placing the dead in larnakes. This mortuary practice and the related iconographical material thus take on a different aspect, which distances them from the religious sphere, where earlier research had placed them, and shows how they reflect the social reality of their time.Part Three presents, analyses, and comments on the archaeological data, i.e. the iconographical material from decorated larnakes, which are listed in alphabetical order based on their find-spots. Apart from the usual details - description of the representations, dimensions, condition, and so on - the catalogue also includes the excavational context of the tombs in which the decorated larnakes were found. This valuable information is used both in Part Two and in Part Four, where the data are collated. This catalogue of archaeological material certainly does not constitute a corpus of the LM III decorated larnakes - a great many of which, unfortunately, are still unpublished and have been for decades - but it could form the nucleus to which will eventually be added both the existing unpublished examples and those that have yet to be unearthed in LM III cemeteries. A short chapter follows (Chapter I.β), which discusses the data produced by a quantitative assessment of all the material. A three-part iconographical analysis of the themes (Chapter II) looks at the chronological and regional distribution of each one, studies the types of larnakes in which they are found, and specifies their respective positions on the sides of the larnakes. All these data are collected so that we can investigate whether any particular theme appears only in one phase of Late Minoan period, in one region, or on one part of the larnax. Finally, there is an iconographical analysis of each theme, both as an isolated motif and as part of each iconographical group.Part Four undertakes a comprehensive approach to the data as a whole. Chapter I discusses how the iconographical groups are arranged on the larnakes, the thematic cycles, the chronological evolution of the thematic repertory, and the thematic differences between the two types of larnakes (chest and bathtubs types). Chapter II presents all the details that help to identify workshops and craftsmen who decorated larnakes in Late Minoan III period. And Chapter III, lastly, makes use of all these data to uncover the symbolic dimensions of the iconography of the larnakes and the messages it conveyed within the complex context of LMIII society and its mortuary practices.The final conclusion to be drawn is that, if it is viewed within the general social and ideological context that produced it, the study of iconography can help to reconstruct the profile of that society and shed light on the various processes that defined the social situation in given historical periods.
Αντικείμενο αυτής της μελέτης είναι οι εικονογραφικοί κύκλοι των Υστερομινωικών ΙΙΙ λαρνάκων. Οι διακοσμημένες λάρνακες αποτελούν μια αριθμητικά ευμεγέθη και χρονολογικά ομοιογενή ομάδα αρχαιολογικού υλικού, όλες προέρχονται από τάφους, δηλαδή αποτελούν μέρος μιας ταφικής πρακτικής, και είναι δημιουργήματα μιας εποχής που την χαρακτηρίζουν ριζικές μεταβολές και ανακατατάξεις σε όλα τα επίπεδα της οικονομικής, κοινωνικής και ιδεολογικής οργάνωσης. Με αυτή την αφετηρία επιδίωξα να διερευνήσω αν και κατά πόσο σε αυτό τμήμα του υλικού πολιτισμού έχουν αποτυπωθεί όψεις των συντελούμενων κατά τη διάρκεια της ΥΜ ΙΙΙ εποχής αλλαγών, καθώς και το ρόλο που διαδραμάτισαν οι λάρνακες στα πλαίσια των ΥΜΙΙΙ ταφικών πρακτικών. Σε αυτό το πλαίσιο το εικονογραφικό υλικό τους προσεγγίζεται ως ενεργό τμήμα του μετανακτορικού πολιτισμού και ως φορέας πολυεπίπεδων μηνυμάτων, που ανακλά ποικίλες όψεις της κοινωνικής οργάνωσης. Η θεωρητική συζήτηση (Μέρος Α) εκτείνεται σε δύο τομείς. Αρχικά, παρουσιάζονται οι θεωρητικοί προβληματισμοί σχετικά με τις διαστάσεις της εικονογραφίας, η οποία εντάσσεται στον κύκλο της τέχνης και του στυλ (Κεφάλαιο Ι) και στη συνέχεια παρουσιάζονται θέματα σχετικά με τις ταφικές πρακτικές και ταφικές τελετουργίες. Στο κεφάλαιο ΙΙΙ επιχειρείται αναδρομή της οπτικής με την οποία προσέγγισαν οι ερευνητές το εικονογραφικό υλικό των λαρνάκων από την εποχή του Evans μέχρι τις μέρες μας. Στο τελευταίο κεφάλαιο (Κεφάλαιο IV) διαγράφονται οι βασικοί μεθοδολογικοί άξονες τους οποίους υιοθετήσαμε για την προσέγγιση του εικονογραφικού υλικού των ΥΜΙΙΙ λαρνάκων.Στο δεύτερο μέρος (Μέρος Β) επιχειρείται η παρουσίαση και η συζήτηση όψεων και προβλημάτων που αφορούν στην ΥΜ ΙΙΙ περίοδο. Σε αυτό το μέρος της εργασίας δημιουργείται το πλαίσιο αναφοράς (context) στο οποίο εντάσσεται το εικονογραφικό υλικό των λαρνάκων. Κύριος στόχος είναι η διερεύνηση των κοινωνικών και ιδεολογικών διαστάσεων που αποκτά σε αυτή την εποχή η πρακτική να τοποθετούνται οι νεκροί σε λάρνακες. Μέσα από τη μελέτη του αρχαιολογικού υλικού διαφαίνεται ότι η συγκεκριμένη πρακτική αρχικά κατά την ΥΜΙΙΙΑ1-2 περίοδο χρησιμοποιείται από τις ηγετικές ομάδες, ενώ στη συνέχεια κατά την ΥΜΙΙΙΒ αποκτά καθολικό χαρακτήρα, μια ένδειξη των κοινωνικών αλλαγών που συμβαίνουν αυτή την περίοδο, ίσως και μια μαρτυρία του αυξανόμενου κοινωνικού ανταγωνισμού. Στο τρίτο μέρος (Μέρος Γ) παρουσιάζονται, αναλύονται και σχολιάζονται τα αρχαιολογικά δεδομένα. Αρχικά παρατίθεται ο κατάλογος με τις διακοσμημένες λάρνακες Εκτός από τα τυπικά στοιχεία ενός καταλόγου, συγκεντρώνονται τα ανασκαφικά συμφραζόμενα των τάφων στους οποίους βρέθηκαν οι διακοσμημένες λάρνακες. Αυτά τα τόσο πολύτιμα στοιχεία αξιοποιήθηκαν τόσο στο δεύτερο μέρος όσο και στο τέταρτο. Έπεται η εικονογραφική ανάλυση των θεμάτων (κεφάλαιο ΙΙ), η οποία διαρθρώνεται σε τρία μέρη. Αρχικά για κάθε θέμα παρουσιάζεται η χρονολογική και γεωγραφική κατανομή του, ακολουθεί η μελέτη του τύπου των λαρνάκων στις οποίες απαντά καθώς και η θέση που καταλαμβάνει στις πλευρές τους. Στο τέλος αναλύεται εικονογραφικά κάθε θέμα τόσο ως μεμονωμένο μοτίβο όσο και ως μέρος κάθε εικονογραφικού συνόλου. Στο τέταρτο και τελευταίο μέρος της εργασίας (Μέρος Δ) επιχειρείται η σύνθεση δεδομένων. Στο πρώτο κεφάλαιο (κεφάλαιο Ι) γίνεται λόγος για τις οργανωτικές αρχές που χαρακτηρίζουν τα εικονογραφικά σύνολα των λαρνάκων, τους θεματικούς κύκλους, τη χρονολογική πορεία του θεματολογίου καθώς και τη θεματική διαφοροποίηση που απαντά ανάμεσα στους δύο τύπους λαρνάκων (κιβωτιόσχημη και λουτηροειδής). Στο δεύτερο κεφάλαιο (κεφάλαιο ΙΙ) γίνεται λόγος για τα εργαστήρια και τους τεχνίτες κατασκευής και διακόσμησης λαρνάκων. Στο τελευταίο κεφάλαιο (κεφάλαιο ΙΙΙ) γίνεται η προσπάθεια να αποκαλυφθούν οι διαστάσεις και τα μηνύματα της εικονογραφίας των λαρνάκων μέσα στο πολυσύνθετο πλαίσιο της ΥΜ ΙΙΙ κοινωνίας και των ταφικών της πρακτικών.Ως τελικό συμπέρασμα προκύπτει ότι η μελέτη της εικονογραφίας μιας κοινωνίας είναι δυνατό, αν ενταχθεί στο ευρύτερο κοινωνικό και ιδεολογικό πλαίσιο που την παρήγαγε, να συμβάλει στην ανασύνθεση της φυσιογνωμίας της καθώς και να φωτίσει τις ποικίλες διεργασίες που προσδιόρισαν την κοινωνική πραγματικότητα σε δεδομένες ιστορικές περιόδους.
