Morphosyntactic innovations in the language of the non literary papyri: The relative constructions

This thesis belongs to the field of diachronic typology, with the emphasis on the diachronic aspect, and its subject is the study of morphological innovations in relativization constructions in the language of the non-literary papyri. The character of this thesis is defined not so much by the theoretical framework of typological analysis, but rather by a more general interpretative schema which approaches the Hellenistic era as a period of transition during which we find recorded the beginnings of important morphosyntactic innovations which were to be of catalytic significance in subsequent developments in the history of the Greek language. An analytic description of the characteristics of relative constructions in the non-literary papyri confirms the transitional character of the language of these texts with regard to the phenomenon of relativization. We observe that the morphosyntactic options available in Ancient Greek are gradually beginning to fall out of use; the old structures are losing ground, making way for new ones, which are still at an early stage of their development in the language of the texts examined here. The contribution of this thesis to the field, beyond the description and interpretation of phenomena connected with relativization in the language of the non-literary papyri, is to demonstrate the need for a detailed and systematic study of the Hellenistic period as an era which is of importance from the point of view of both the diachronic and the geographical dimensions of the development of the Greek language.
