The PhD thesis is about microfaunal skeletal remains (micromammals, gekkoes, lizards and snakes) from three Bronze Age settlements in the south Aegean: Akrotiri on Thera, Mochlos and Minoan Khania on Crete. The importance of this study lies within the fact that microfauna is a very useful palaeoenvironmental indicator for the reconstruction of past vegetation and also can shed light on the interaction between humans and commensal rodents as well as the dispersal routes of certain species by humans in the south Aegean territory. Identification of species was based on the skeletal anatomic taxonomy, morphology and morphometry (both classical and geometric). The identified species are: Mus musculus domesticus, Mus minotaurus, Apodemus mystacinus, Apodemus sylvaticus/flavicollis, Crocidura zimmermanni, Crocidura cf. suaveolens, Suncus etruscus, Gekkonidae, Cyrtopodium sp., Lacertidae, Elaphe cf. quattorlineata, Telescopus fallax, Vipera sp. A detailed taphonomic approach of the material was conducted aiming at the identification of the causes of death and deposition of the microvertebrates, as well as the postdepositional factors that affected the preservation status of the material. The identified microvertebrates lived as commensals, nesting inside the walls, on the roofs and in the cellars. Protection strategies against the viruses transmitted through rodent feces include the use of stone or clay covers for the storage vessels and the intentional burning for sanitary reasons. It seems obvious that the Bronze Age islanders were used to coexisting with the commensal micromammals in the same areas. The identified species from Akrotiri and their microhabitat requirements indicate the existence of deciduous woodland and areas of maquis vegetation on Thera during the Bronze Age. Furthermore, the discovery of Crocidura zimmermanni in Akrotiri pinpoints a human dispersal of this shrew outside Crete during the Bronze Age, possibly due to the commercial relationship between the two islands. The identified species from Khania and Mochlos betray an intense competition between endemic (Mus minotaurus, Crocidura zimmermanni) and imported ones (Mus musculus domesticus, Crocidura cf. suaveolens), which limited the endemic ones tο the west part of Crete and resulted in the elimination of Mus minotaurus. Furthermore, we encounter a human dispersal of the house mouse in the south Aegean from Cyprus as early as the Early Bronze Age onwards, as well as the import of the shrew Crocidura cf. suaveolens in Crete during the same period. Finally, we conclude that man’s impact on non commensal species (Apodemus mystacinus, Apodemus sylvaticus/flavicollis, Crocidura zimmermanni, Crocidura cf. suaveolens) to colonize the human habitat and to compete with the house mouse for the commensal niche is stronger than anticipated in the south Aegean during the Bronze Age.
