Roman vaulted construction in the imperial period: organization of the construction and dissemination of the building techniques in the Peloponnese

Vitti, Paolo

The Doctoral Thesis “Roman vaulted construction in the imperial period. A study on the building techniques of the Peloponnese” analyses the construction techniques and particularly vaulted constructions in the Roman imperial time (1st -3rd century AD) in the Peloponnese. It is an extremely interesting subject in great part unknown or only partially studied, since it was not within the interest of the archaeological researchers. For this reason the main aim of the thesis was to localise and list Roman vaulted constructions together with their graphic and photographic documentation. On the basis of this were processed the following objectives: a) understanding the historical, economical and ideological context which brought to the design and construction of these buildings; b) their analysis, understanding, interpretation and taxonomical classification; c) their comparison with similar constructions in Rome and the understanding of possible mutual influence; d) on the interpretation of the design process on the basis of the construction details; e) the understanding of the influential role the local materials had on the quality of the construction.Given the reduced bibliography dealing with the analysis of construction techniques of Roman Peloponnesian buildings, the study was based on autoptic survey of selected case studies and on sketches showing the construction details. The documentation made possible the understanding of the building solutions adopted by the builders together with their interpretation. After an introduction, an account on the methodology used for the research and on previous scholarship on Roman vaulting, the study is divided into four chapters. Having first considered the building methods documented in Rome itself, it proceeds to illustrate construction techniques in the Peloponnese, emphasising their particular nature, the process by which they were adopted and possible reasons for their success. Chapter 1 deals with the vaulted construction in Rome. This chapter introduces the Roman building technique as developed in Rome, thus establishing the parameters for understanding the differences with the Peloponnesian context, where peculiar vaulting developed differently than in Rome, because of the use of brick shells under the concrete mass. This technique was never used in Rome, at least not in the 1st-3rd centuries. Though based on the most relevant recent bibliography on concrete vaults, this chapter includes some personal statements on the structural use of brick in concrete vaulting, never specifically discussed in previous literature. Chapter 2 analyses the building activity and patronage in the Peloponnese. The progressive spread of Roman architectural and construction models in the Peloponnese depends to a large extent on the strategy Rome used to stop the on-going decadence of the region. This chapter gives a general view of the way this change occurred and which key factors influenced the profound Peloponnesian transformations. The first two sections are dedicated to the transformations that occurred in imperial times in the region and to the major cities, demonstrating the effectiveness of the policy Rome adopted at the end of the 1st century BCE and pursued in the following century. The third section looks at the possible reasons for the Roman architectural models’ success. Particular attention is paid in the fourth section to the bath buildings since they are considered by many scholars as one of the agents for the assimilation of Roman style of life in the Provinces, and are also among the most typical architectural structures developed in imperial times and definitely depended on Roman building techniques and technology. The fifth and final section analyses the subtle policy enacted by Hadrian to catalyse the process of acceptance of Roman models in Greece. His interventions were enhanced by private senatorial euergetism.Chapter 3 is dedicated to the examination of 29 case studies, belonging to different areas of the Peloponnese. The buildings have been selected taking into account different contexts: the urban context of the capital of the Province, Corinth; the urban context of important centres such as Argos; less important cities such as Troezen and Gyhteion; isolated constructions in suburban contexts; regional public works such as aqueducts. Since it is not possible to discuss vaulting without considering the abutments, in some cases the discussion has been extended to the supporting structures and occasionally to the whole fabric. The discussion is largely based on original sketches and drawings made during site visits or subsequently. Many of the buildings included in the study had never been drawn or even studied before. Most relevant building characteristics are highlighted at the end of each description. Chapter 4 focuses on the architectural and construction techniques used in Peloponnesian buildings. The information gathered in the previous chapter allows better understanding of Vitruvius 2.3, where he deals with the brick construction, making it possible to link fired-brick construction in Northern Italy with a similar construction method in Greece during the late Republic, especially in the two Augustan cities of Patras and Nikopolis. The study offers a possible understanding of the workmanship involved in the building industry and points out the ways in which solid-brick vaulting and concrete vaulting were employed. The intention is to demonstrate that local workmen were experienced and expert enough to face technical and structural problems and that a local tradition for construction developed from the early 1st century. This chapter also investigates the external aspects that inspired Peloponnesian construction: on one hand the Italic construction tradition, that can possibly be related to the veterans established in the colonies and to important constructions designed and realised with imported architects and manpower; on the other, the eastern vaulting tradition imported from Parthia and used for the first time in the Great Hall of Argos.
