Coan funerary monuments: a contribution to the study of the typology and the iconography of the funerary monuments of the hellenistic and roman period

This doctoral thesis aims at the presentation of the coan funerary monuments and grave-markers, at the exploration of their technical characteristics, as well as of the grave-markers’ typology, subject-matter, iconography and typology of the figures depicted, and, at finally, at the interpretation of their inscription, in order to trace the role of the coan funerary monuments’ workshop among the rest of the Hellenistic workshops and its impact on the funerary art of that period. All these elements are presented in the eight units (II-IX) of Part A of the study.1200 grave-markers are under investigation in our study, including three groups of monuments unknown to previous scholars, whereas small fragments of tombstones, especially of plain steles, not contributing to the study of iconography or typology, are left out. The methodology of research selected for approaching our material is its typological classification, which was prompted from the material itself, since the majority of the monuments does not bear a relief scene. In case that such a scene is depicted, however, the iconography of the monuments is also thoroughly explored. The monuments are described in detail in the Catalogue (Part B) and are depicted in full (Part C), in order for the reader to form the best possible impression of their form. As far as the graves and the necropoleis are concerned, they are briefly presented, based on the little published material available. An unpublished, vaulted tomb of the “Macedonian type” is also included in the study. The doctoral thesis concludes with two short Annexes and a list of concordances between our catalogue numbers and the ones of the main coan epigraphical corpora (comparatio numerorum). All in all, the conclusions of this study can be summarized as follows: there was a highly active workshop at Cos from the 3rd c. BC to the 3rd c. AD., specializing in the production of funerary monuments. Very few reliefs of the Archaic and the Classical period have been preserved, whereas the reliefs of the Hellenistic and Roman period are also few in number and present a similar iconography to the rest of the Hellenistic workshops. Nevertheless, some innovative reliefs have been produced. The contribution of the coan workshop to the Hellenistic funerary art lies, mainly, in the systematic production of aniconic types of grave-markers, which become very popular during the Late Hellenistic and Roman period throughout the Greek world, especially the various types of altars. The altar is the means of shaping the concept of heroization of the dead, as it consists the recipient of funerary cult, that is why it was so highly appreciated by the Coans. The cylindrical altar is, most probably, first used at Cos as a grave-marker and it is systematically produced, adorned with boukephalia and garlands, from the late 3rd c. BC to the 1st c. AD. Another class of altars used in funerary cult is the rectangular altars with volutes, a type elsewhere unattested for funerary use. Another innovation of the coan workshop is the production of the type of pillar-shaped altar, especially a variation crowned by a relief pediment on the front, which was widespread in other regions during the Roman period. Innovating is also the production, in a fairly large number of monuments, of the type of marble, solid crater as a grave-marker.The heyday of the workshop, as far as the quality but to a large extent also the quantity of the production is concerned, lies in 2nd c. BC. In the 1st century an equally active, but massive production goes on. The production declines during the Roman period, at least the one of relief steles and altars. The plain steles, rendered in a more simplified form, increase in number, whereas new classes of modest monuments, such as the columnellae or the phallus-shaped monuments, make their appearance. Quite frequent is also the reuse of earlier tombstones. The Romanization of art is apparent in some new types of monuments, such as the portrait busts, the sarcophagi and the gladiatorial reliefs, all of them few in number.
