The notion of abstraction in Hegel’s and Schopenhauer’s aesthetics of music

The present thesis attempts to indicate, systematize and reconstruct the significance of the notion of abstraction in Hegel’s and Schopenhauer’s aesthetics of music. Since both philosophers include the art of music in their system of aesthetics by setting criteria for the nature of music itself that are related to the way in which each philosopher constructs his idealism, the thesis examines the notion of abstraction as this transits from the theory of knowledge to the art of music through each one’s individual theory of aesthetics. Therefore, the dissertation is divided into two main chapters, the first examining the case of Hegel and the second the case of Schopenhauer, and is finally completed with a presentation of comparative conclusions. Each chapter consists respectively of three sections that examine: a) the cognitive presuppositions set by each philosopher on the notion of abstraction, b) the manner in which these presuppositions are used and systematized by each one in his individual art system, and c) the reconstruction of the notion of abstraction, both in Hegel’s aesthetics of music and in Schopenhauer’s metaphysics of music. The study focuses on the different approach that each philosopher has for the art of music and detects in contradistinction the following views: For Hegel the understanding is a necessary condition for the formation of the musical material and the musical form, whereas Schopenhauer disapproves every aspect of musical form and all its intellectual perception. Hegel’s principle of sound is the abstract inner subjectivity, whereas for Schopenhauer music exposes the metaphysical element of any natural thing in the world, the will itself. For Hegel the abstract character of the sound pattern disrupts the relation between musical form and its specific subject-matter, because the mere sounding cannot include a spiritual content, whereas for Schopenhauer the musical sound has a valuable significance because it connects us with the pure essence of things, with the true intuitive knowledge. According to the conclusions of the study, since music cannot be categorized in regard to its representational capacity, for Hegel music lies closest to inner freedom, whereas Schopenhauer lifts it beyond the prevalence of matter and "platonic ideas". Nevertheless, the thesis demonstrates that musical forms have rational, intellectual and aesthetic characters and their meaning cannot be assessed independently of these, so the notion of abstraction, from the points of view of both the musical form and the content, holds a relationship of mutual dependence and inter-definition with other notions and parameters.
