3. and Vf <0,55 belongs to the class 1 of tectonic activity. The active normal faults of the region and the recurring phenomena “wind gap” and “water gap” create distinctive topographical and hydrological structures to the drainage network as in the region of Sofiko, Agios Ioannis, the eastern course of Xiria torrent (twists and movements) and the region of hilly Corinth.Typical structures and shapes of active tectonics are: creation of streams of long length and narrow width, shifting of riverbeds, old riverbed and deltas, turns of main river course, and shifts of deltas, transformations of straight-type rivers in network-type form and vice versa, local narrowing of the riverbed or river valley, reversal of the flow of water, segmentation of the drainage pattern, orthogonal capture of streams, increase of the erosion along the depth of the streams and torrents (V-shaped valleys), alluvial deposits and development of alluvial fans. There is also created in the region a particular type of drainage pattern, which was named by the author as "cactus-like" type because it takes the form of cactus, which in the literature is referred to as directional trellis or fault trellis. There are also created basins having characteristic shapes. A representative basin is elongated in the central portion and circular at the edges of the faults. The active faults of the region influence also the ground water circulation and controls karstic springs.. Types: PhD Thesis.
Active faults in the eatern gulf of Corinth

Asimakopoulos, Marios

Active Faults in Eastern and Central CorinthThe eastern and central regions of the Corinthian prefecture is traditionally considered as an area affected by active normal faults. Most of these faults are more or less of E-W direction. Specifically these active faults are separated into E-W, ENE- and WNW- trending faults. These faults are bounding tectonically controlled basins. 29 master faults of which 22 are synthetic normal faults of dipping to the north, 3 antithetic faults, and 4 transfer faults were mapped. Of these faults, the 6 normal and 2 antithetic faults are considered as accommodate recent seismic events. The faults that were mapped in the study area are classified in three groups on the basis of: 1) their discrete geographical distribution 2) their localization in different lithological sections; and iii) their chronological evolution. The study of the three groups of faults documents the influence of tectonics on the geomorphological landscape .The most important faults of the studied area the faults named as the Nemea, Millos, Kenchreai, Agios Dimitrios, Tripou, Corinth, Lechaiou, Ancient Corinth, Asopos, and Stimagka-Asprokampos faults. The geology of the faults, their influence on the lithology and hydrogeology within this study area, in combination with records of historical seismology improves our understanding of the tectonic evolution of the region. The detailed mapping of active faults, the reports of their geometric and morphological characteristics demonstrate the activity of the faults in the studied area. There are recognized as characteristic fault arrays, related with the development of rollover anticlines and areas of overlapping fault segments. The tectonic activity increase from S to N, i.e. from the border fault towards the center of the Corinth graben, and from E-W, that has been confirmed and in other regions of the Corinth graben. The profile of a typical fault of the region consists from two parallel faults with the activity to approach either the "upward" or "downward" fault. The mapping of active tectonics οn the morphology of the area is reflected through a series of morphometric indices. Morphometric indices used were Vf, Smf, Bs. The values of morphometric indices also show that the faults are highly active. The active tectonics based on the values of the indicators Smf <1,25, Bs> 3. and Vf <0,55 belongs to the class 1 of tectonic activity. The active faults of the region influence also the ground water circulation and controls karstic springs.
