Η υποδοχή του Poe στην Ελλάδα και ο φακός του Ροΐδη (EL)
The reception of Poe in Greece and Roidis ' perspective (EN)

It is widely known how Baudelaire's reception of Poe's works influenced, through his articles and translations, on Europeans' ideal image of the American author. Despite the dominant image of the decadent romantic writer, precursor of Symbolism, the first presentation of Poe's work in Greece was somehow different. E. Roidis translated «The facts in the case of Mr. Valdemar» accompanied by a short foreword (1877). This note emphasized on the image of a writer who played with his audience by hoaxes based on the verisimilitude of his writings, after finding out that this is the only way to survive and attract public's attention. Although Roidis' source.of information was mainly Baudelaire, as it is seen by the comparison, he adjusted Poe's image to his own perspective and surroundings, as if he hadn't read Baudelaire's articles. Roidis' own previous writings are shown to be, as if living a parallel life, forerunners of the way he presented Poe, unveiling a somehow forgotten side of Poe's work, the two-in-one sided world of literature and its reception.
